Sermon Series – “Happy Are…”

February 20, 2015 |

From January to April 2015 we’ll be studying the Beatitudes, from Matthew 5:3-12. The sermon series is called “HAPPY ARE…” The Beatitudes are 8 statements by the Lord Jesus each beginning with the phrase, “Blessed are…” The word is a translation of a Greek word makarios which, on one level, means happy. So, the Beatitudes describe where true happiness is found and what true happiness looks like.

According to Jesus, happy are… “the poor in spirit” … “those who mourn” … “the meek” … “those who hunger and thirst for righteousness” … “the merciful” … “the pure in heart” … “the peacemakers” … “those persecuted because of righteousness.” (Matthew 5:3-10).  The words of Jesus provide a view of happiness that is upside down compared to the world’s view of happiness.

Of course, the Beatitudes are more than a description of true happiness. They also show us what it means to be approved (blessed) by God.  Perhaps you can see a little more clearly why it is so crucial that we take the time to study the Beatitudes as a church.
